I ve spent the last 2 years working in a call center with a major cell phone company. The pay was definitely a step up from what I was used to in my previous jobs since I ve worked mostly part time while obtaining my degree, but after all is said and done, that s really not what I think the best part about this job is. What s really been big for me has been the learning experience that s come with spending eight hours a day talking to customers on the phone. From a customer service standpoint, I feel as though I am now an expert. I truly understand the value of a good customer and what it actually means to a company. And looking back, I think that s one of the biggest things we can gain from our jobs: learning experience.

Invariably, if we put enough time in at a specific position, we come out of it as experts. Whether it s in drivng a truck, working in construction, making an ice cream sundae, or answering phones, no matter how entry level the task seems to be, we always come out of the job with a new perspective on that particular craft. And with that new perspective comes a more qualified opinion of the world, at least in that field. For instance, when I started this job, I thought I already possessed what would be considered top notch customer service. After going through eight weeks of training and looking back on my previous jobs, I can see that there were occasions I just didn t do right by the customer. I m also a much better judge of how I feel as a customer at other establishments, such as restaurants. I know how a good customer should be treated, and as a result, I want to be treated in a certain way if I m going to feel good about the business and continue to give them my hard earned money.

Obviously, jobs go a long way towards netting you that aforementioned money, so in addition to that invaluable life experience, they re also crucial to survival. This isn t something you realize so much until you re out of work, or when a large percentage of the country is out of work; a time like now, for instance, when the economy is slumping and jobs are scarce. That creates fierce competition where even the most basic of jobs have college graduates in the selection process, thus really weeding out those without a college diploma, the ones who really need jobs the most in the first place. It s during times like these we really learn the true value of an honest job, even if they do sometimes take the time out of our day when we could be pursuing our primary passions and interests.

Then again, if you follow a great piece of advice and do what you love for a living, then you don t even have to worry about that problem. In many ways, our jobs tend to define us as people whether we want them to or not, so it s best to choose wisely and appreciate what we have and give thanks to whatever got us there.
