It can be hard to understand the many options available in portable computing nowadays. There are laptops, notebooks, and now even a new thing called netbooks to choose from. But what is the difference between the three, and how do you know which is right for you?

Smaller than a notebook, a netbook is a streamlined mini computer made for accessing and communicating across the internet. It can do more than simply browse the internet, but it is not what it is designed for. Using these computers for gaming or video editing will not produce the best results.

The other two members of the mobile computer family are not defined by their capabilities. Notebooks and laptops are classified strictly by their size. A laptop computer is the largest option. Its name means: a computer that you can sit on your lap. A notebook computer has a similarly simple definition: a computer the size of a writing notebook. Within their primary definition of notebook or laptop, these computers will vary in features, power and functionality.

In addition to size, there are other differences between the tiny net notebooks and other portable computers. One noticeable difference is price. Netbooks are typically the most affordable options and typically are under $500.

Even though it is possible for a notebook and a netbook to be the same size, the functionality of a netbook is a lot different from the notebook computers. Netbook computers typically have less power, and cannot run most powerful operating systems. For many this is not a problem, because only using the internet does not require a lot of power out of a computer.

The problem with this however, is that many consumers do not realize that their affordable tiny computers cannot do all of the things their desktop or even their last notebook could do. Many people begin to miss having a CD or DVD drive, which is not available in all models. They also may not connect to the internet at the fastest possible speed or process general information at a speed that other computers can.

The greatest setback to netbooks might actually be how small they are. The keyboards are smaller and some adults have trouble adjusting to them. Also, the smaller screens, which can be as little as 9 inches, may not be ideal for some users.

If you understand the true definition of a "net"book, it is easy to understand why some people love them. You can also understand why they are not notebooks are laptops. These new additions to the computing world are a simple, tiny and affordable way to access the net.
