One of the best things to do at an art festival, besides see all that fabulous art, is to sit back with a funnel cake in your hand and beer in the other, and people watch. I daresay that an art festival features as much human art as any piece of visual art according to the founder of the Naples International Art Festival, John Eimerman.

The next time you’re at a festival try playing the following game, either alone or with a companion. At each festival you can be guaranteed to find a few key people: the dude with the parrot on his shoulder, the hippie lady with the tie dyed tank top and pendulous breasts, the family with the stroller that seats six attempting to move through a throng of hot sweaty people, the child on a leash.

It seems that art festivals bring out every type of person, from serious art dealer to wanna-be artist, to the person who comes to sit on a bench with a funnel cake in one hand, a beer in the other and watch. It’s often a humorous look at society to see what these types of people are buying, where are they lingering? Take care, however, that you don’t actually follow people around. This borders on stalking and is unwise, as well as unsettling for the poor unsuspecting Human Art form.

If this particular game fails to bring amusement, one can also turn their attention to the artists themselves. At every art show or festival the artists are an interesting study. Do they match their art? For instance, does the artist who has so careful macramé’d the hanging baskets or belts match this art form? Are they earthy and “grass roots” looking? Or does the artist look like a hobbyist?

In the booth with handmade t-shirts, is it a mom with her children in tow? Is there a booth where the artist has obviously stayed home and sent a trusted family member or spouse in their stead?

The nice thing about an art fair is that should you be broke, bored, or an artist on break…the Human Art walking around never fails to amuse, as long as you’re looking!

“There is scarcely a time when the art itself is the only show at the show,” noted John Eimerman.

So look around and take in all that your admission fee provided. And enjoy the refreshments.
