Your body is a complex operation, sometimes it's easy to identify the causes of high blood pressure within it, other times not so easy. It's important to get your diagnosis and treatment started early to avoid other potentially harmful side effects of hypertension. In many cases, knowing some of the possible causes of high blood pressure, such as the ones we'll be covering below, can allow you to make helpful changes in your lifestyle.

High blood pressure is common in pregnant women but it is usually severe although it does sometimes need to be treated with medication. A sudden rise in blood pressure to extreme levels during pregnancy is called preeclampsia and is very dangerous for both the mother and the baby. This can happen to women with no history of hypertension but women who had high blood pressure before becoming pregnant are at a greater risk. For this reason, it's important for women who are pregnant to have their blood pressure monitored.

One problem with high blood pressure is that, in many cases, there is no known cause. Doctors diagnose most cases of high blood pressure as essential hypertension, meaning there is not a specific cause that is known.

Even though there are many habits and elements that make it more likely that you'll develop high blood pressure, in most cases there is not one simple cause that can be identified. It's important to realize that the only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have it tested frequently. Regardless of whether or not you can figure out the cause of high blood pressure, you can take measures to lower it to a healthy level.

One way to control your blood pressure is to pay attention to your cholesterol level. There are two types of cholesterol you have to pay attention to, often called good and bad cholesterol. Atherosclerosis, or blockage of the arteries, as well as hypertension, can result from having high levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol.

The beneficial kind of cholesterol is HDL, and this does the opposite of LDL, and can help lower your blood pressure. Good cholesterol levels are maintained by exercising regularly and eating fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. Lowering your levels of bad cholesterol is mainly a matter of avoiding unhealthy foods, such as fast food, and most foods that contain processed carbohydrates and trans fats. Lowering your cholesterol often helps to lower your blood pressure as both are important factors when it comes to your overall health. In conclusion, it can be helpful to look at some of the causes of high blood pressure, such as the ones outlined above. If you might be at risk be sure you ask your doctor for treatment and diagnosis possibilities before beginning any regimen.
