Ahhh senior year of high school. For me this was one of those years where memories were formed forever. The emotion of leaving high school. Wondering if you'd ever see these friends again. The excitment of where life will lead you. All the thoughts of the unknown and what to come. Needless to say its a very exhilirating time. I found senior year in high school to really be a defining point for me. Going to college was something almost everyone did where I grew up. Not going wasn't really much of an option when living in a white upper-middle class town. Knowing going to college was a must really didn't leave you thinking about other options. Of course I feel lucky to have had the oppurtunity to go. A lot of kids these days don't have the same oppurtunities I did growing up.
Its funny how at the time I really wished I didnt need to go away to school. The summer before I left for college was one of the best summers of my life. It also didn't help much that alot of my friends were planning on staying home and were going to local colleges. Halfway through senior year I also already knew which school I was going to go to. It really didn't leave me with much need to worry about academics since I wasn't going to need a scholarship, financial aid or a grant of any kind. Once I was excepted to the school of my choice I basically spent the rest of the year having fun, partying, playing sports and doing everything but worry about my college career. While some of my friends were doing their best to position themselves for scholarships I couldn't have cared less. Towards the end of my senior year things got a bit weird around the house. My parents weren't talking very much and you could tell their relationship was on the outs. I found out a few weeks before the year ended that my dad was leaving my mom. Funny how this wasn't very surprising and for a teenage boy it wasnt really all that tramatic. The biggest issue though is this left my parents in a difficult financial position and my plans for college were changed. Now I needed that scholarship and I didn't really have things in place to get one.
I always stress to the high school students planning on going to college to make sure they do what they can to receive financial aid whether they need it or not. You never know when things change. Life can get crazy, plans don't always work out and things sometimes can go wrong. It never hurts to give yourself the best chance in life. Whether thats with academics, sports, hobbies whatever. Don't take certain situations for granted. Make sure you are doing your best and putting yourself in the best positions to succeed. My senior year although it was great didn't end that way. It left me in a position that could have easily been avoided.
