Murcia is a wonderful holiday destination; it has successfully kept its Spanish charm by remaining relatively untouched by the normal tourist traits. Murcia is simply great for those who are looking for a traditional Spanish holiday without compromising on beautiful beaches, sunshine or activities! With a host of permanent attractions such as the Mar Menor, there's plenty on offer to visitors here, so it's worth considering Car Hire at Murcia Airport to make the most of the area from the moment you arrive! In addition, you will find an array of annual festivals and events which only adds extra appeal to Murcia!

The first major festival is in the Spring and rest assured, this is a superb time to visit! Not only is the weather getting warmer, there's still a chance to grab some great hotel and car hire deals. Furthermore, the Murcia Spring Festival kicks off in early April which usually lasts for 5 days and is an anticipated annual event attended by many locals and tourists alike.

The festival sees the city of Murcia come alive with lights and sounds as the Spaniards celebrate the beginning of Spring. The locals, known as 'penas', will dress in embroidered regional costumes representative of their village and participate in eccentric performances and processions around the city. Market stalls known as 'barracas' and food carts line the streets, parks and gardens; many people's favourite parts of the festival! Take the opportunity to sample classic Murcia cuisine or purchase some local sausage, fruit, vegetables and wine as well as local crafts and gifts!

Another highlight of the festival is the "Bando de le Huerta"! This is the main parade of the festival and you will be sure to find yourself in awe of the fantastic music and dance groups! You will also discover an endless variety of terrific costumed characters who wind their way through the centre streets with an abundance of colour and energy. Don't forget to watch the many impressive floats pass by too!

Various festivities commence throughout the five day period with the end of the festival marked by a somewhat peculiar ceremony known as "The Burial of the Sardine". The title says it all and it is renowned as one of the wackiest nights of the year in Murcia. It sees a huge paper sardine carried through the city with a multitude of floats following, distributing toys and gifts into the crowd! Upon arrival at the Old Bridge, 'Puente Viejo', the fish is set on fire. Fireworks proceed to light up the night sky indicating the end of the festival, however for many, the party continues into the small hours!

It really is a brilliant time to visit this city; with so much to offer, it's an added treat to see the city truly come alive! If the excitement becomes too much for you, car hire in Murcia will allow you to escape to some quieter pastures and enjoy this charming area!
