You have done a makeover on the living room. New furniture, paint and floor covering all look great. The only problem is the throw cushions that you thought you could still use suddenly look very old and out of place. There is still a little money left in the budget, so you head over to the store to see what is available. There you find the perfect cushions, but not the right price.
You start back to the car, saddened but realizing all you can do is use what you have.
When heading home, you remember that your grandma has great taste and might have some ideas for a better place to buy cushions. Grandma is known for living well within her budget, but she is a decorator from way back. Her home is always trendy and up to date. If anyone knows a solution to your dilemma, it will be her. It s time to pick her brain for a few cushion ideas.
As you visit, you bring up the problem you are having with cushions. Finally you just ask where she finds all her great decorating ideas. Her answer is at the fabric store.
This does not make sense to you. You know that the lady spends a lot of time at the fabric store, but you thought it was to get material for all her stylish clothing she makes for herself.
Grandma s chuckle makes you realize you have missed something. She goes on to inform you that she not only buys fabric for clothing, but also for decorating. She points out the cushions around her home that she has made herself.
You find that she not only makes cushions, she often re upholsters furniture and people think that it is brand new. Her sofa is the one she had when you were born. She has re covered it several times by herself. The chair you are sitting in is on its sixth or seventh covering.
Her cushion secret is this, make them yourself. This allows her to get the exact look she wants without having to shop all over town or pay inflated prices. Her cost is a yard or so of fabric, some thread and a new zipper.
You see from the gleam in her eye that you are in luck this afternoon. You both hop into your car and collect the old cushions from you house. Grandma explains that you will need them for the stuffing. Then you are off to the fabric store. There you find many patterns of material that would look great.
Grandma gives a few suggestions on the best fabric for cushions and you make your choice. Now its back to Grandma s.
You remove the stuffing for the old cushions and save it. One of the cushions it taken apart and the parts are used as a pattern for the new material. Grandma s trusty sewing machine whirs along as the new covers come together. A zipper is added to allow access for stuffing the pillows.
By the time you get home that evening, you have a perfect set of matched cushions for your new living room.
