The old man on the bench wearing a denim baseball cap that says Atlas Tires has every old baseball cap he has ever owned. Even from his childhood he saved every cap. Some of them have logos from baseball teams that no longer exist today. Some have advertisements from companies that are now defunct. When asked why he saved all his old hats, after all, some are so scruffy they would be impossible to wear today, he said he doesn’t care if he wears them or not. He loves old baseball caps and is never without one. He is retired now so he can do as he pleases.

His collection has structured and unstructured caps. There are several caps from the army in camouflage green with flat crowns and a pure white one that must have been worn on a ship. One, with so many tears in it, was used to hook fishing flies so they would be handy when he needed them. In fact, he had several like that. He must have worn them out every year or so with the fishhooks and needed to start a new one. He has a cap from every major baseball team and some other sports too.

Some of the low profile baseball caps on the internet look exactly like some of his old ones, soft and easy to keep in a pocket or a bag. They are faded and frayed too, but the new ones were carefully made to look old. He thought that was hilarious. He didn’t understand why someone would buy a hat that looked unusable. He could probably sell some of his old baseball caps for quite a lot.

Many of his old baseball caps were “trucker” caps, given away free as advertisement. He knew where he got each cap and could tell a story about it. Some were promotions from new companies to attract new business with their contact information written on the front. Some were given to employees in a company or restaurant to commemorate an anniversary or special occasion. He had many old baseball caps from different countries such as Britain or Barbados. When asked if he visited all the countries named on his caps he said, that he hadn’t and most of them were gifts from friends who had traveled and knew he collected baseball caps.

Old baseball caps never go out of style. They have looked the same since around the 1950’s but are actually much older than that. They were first used in Brooklyn, New York, by a baseball team in the 19th century and started becoming popular in 1900 as the Brooklyn style cap. Today everyone wears them, both men and women and almost every sportsman whether a basketball player or car racer is seen wearing one. The brim can point straight ahead, left or right or even backwards depending on your mood and meaning. If you love old baseball caps don’t worry. You can buy them brand new online.
