Skateboarding doesn't look hard... put one foot down and move yourself along until you're going. And then you'll be skateboarding! Awesome! However, watching it and actually doing it are two entirely different things. It's a sport that requires a lot of practice. Even if you can manage to stay completely on the skateboard, what about all the cool tricks that can be done? How about those extreme tricks you've seen others do? Now before you get bummed because you're not quite there yet - just know that even the very best started where you are right now. Here are some things you can do to help speed up your learning process.

First - get the right gear! Yes you might feel a little silly wearing the knee pads, elbow pads, shin guards and helmet. However, if you're really new to the sport, very quickly you'll be happy for wearing that gear. But it's like learning to ride a bike. You'll fall more than you ride, especially true for extreme newbies. Properly stopping your board will most likely give you more troubles than you want. As you progress, you'll probably decide to leave the safety gear at home. But it's recommended to keep wearing the helmut. You want some protection in case you get surprised by something and fall off. Try to face your fears. Many new skateboarders are too scared to do too much too quickly. They understand very fast that there's not much in the way between being safe and getting injured. You just gotta come to terms with this thought if you ever want to be a good skater. If you never deal with this you'll never be able to do those cool tricks. The only real way to get over this is to keep practicing. When you practice you'll find yourself getting more comfortable and willing to try. Learning the best way to fall will help you, too. You'll find your skating will be much better and your improvement is faster if you deal with these issues in your mind.

The two basic stances are Goofy and Regular. The Regular stance is done with the left foot in front, right foot in the rear. In Goofy the opposite is true. There are four basic push offs you can do. Goofy (use your left foot), and Mongo Goofy: push with your front (left) foot, Regular (use your right foot to push), Mongo Regular: push with your front (right) foot It will take time to figure out which works best for you. Just about any person can learn how to ride a skateboard. If you can be patient and learn slowly, then you really can do anything you desire on a board. It's so important to be patient, if you are you'll arrive there!
