Passion. I m not talking romance novels here folks. I m referring to your passion. I m talking about doing what you want to do in life instead of what you have to do, what s expected of you, or what is the minimum to get by. If you act on what your passion is and continue to push that passion forward, you can expect a happy and well fulfilled life.
For many people in America, the status quo is to get an education, get a job, stay at that job until retirement, and to retire with a happy income and go fishing with your grandkids until you croak. While I like the fishing idea, the rest of it is unfortunately a foregone method devised in a foregone time in America. The fact is, this is statistically not a reality.
With layoffs abound and big corporations constantly dipping their greedy paws into your retirement funds and 401k s, you cannot expect to believe in the above scenario.
The American dream can be defined as seeking what you love to do and getting paid well for it. It doesn t get much simpler than that. However, getting started on that dream will take a great deal of persistence, ambition, discipline, diligence, and patience. In a word, passion.
If you place yourself in a position where you are doing what you love to do and getting paid well for it, you ve just put yourself easily in the upper 1 percentile in this country. The reason for this is that most people are content with working for meager rations. I would contend that even if you work professionally, you are still dependent on a second party to provide you with a paycheck, and your time is not your own. This to me is not living, nor should it be to you.
Your life is your own. Living in a way where you dictate the direction in which you and your family move is so infinitely liberating, you ll wonder why you d ever considered living any other way.
Out the window of an apartment I once lived in, you could plainly see a parking lot attached to a building. Every weekday, cars pulled in at around 8 a.m., then around 5 p.m., they all trickled out of the parking lot, one by one. I imagined them fighting gridlock an hour and a half there, an hour and a half back. I could imagine the 9 hours they spent within the walls of that building. I could imagine the backbiting, the coffee and danishes, the broken 401k s, and the management who act high and mighty when you re around, but they turn into cringing toads when their bosses arrive. This is a slice of life for too many Americans who can t break their bonds. Nothing fueled my passion more than to see those cars on a daily basis.
What is your passion? Find it. Chase it. Do whatever you can to live your life strictly on your terms. If you wake up in the morning at 4 a.m., make sure it s because you want to, not because it is what s required of you. If you live by your passions, you will inevitably find that it pulls the best attributes out of you and you will not only be financially prosperous, you will have made yourself a better person overall!
