Every time I walk into the kids' bedrooms, I feel as if we have outgrown our house. Their toys and clothes seem to multiply daily making it more and more of an obstacle course to make beds or put clothes and toys away. It's not that they are terribly untidy; just that everything seems to occupy too much space. Option one was to move to a bigger house while option two was to consider space-saving bunk beds.
We started looking at bunk beds together to get an idea of what is available. What is available is an astonishing range. I had no idea there were so many to choose from. They come in so many different styles that can transform bedrooms into great playrooms and stimulate children's imaginations, which I think is so important. They also offer wonderful storage solutions.
The kids have been asking for bunk beds for years, but I always considered them too young. I'm a worrier and am naturally concerned about the safety aspects - especially of the upper bunk. I'd heard horror stories of accidents, of children falling head first from the top bunk, or getting trapped between the frame and the wall. I was therefore reassured to know that safety regulations have become much stricter in recent years and that with a sturdy frame and safety guards, the risks of accident are now greatly reduced.
We discovered that with most bunk beds, mattresses are sold separately. It is therefore important that correct-sized mattresses are used. If a mattress is too small, the resulting gap could prove dangerous. Regular maintenance is also important. It should become a routine to periodically check that everything is tight and stable. This includes the ladder and the safety rails.
The boys shortlisted their choices but left the final decision to us, so of course we went for the sturdiest frame we could find. This had a wood frame with proper stairs (rather than a ladder) to the top bunk. The steps were a great idea because they incorporated storage for the boys' possessions. There was also storage under the bottom bunk, ideal for bed linen or clothes.
Now my kids are reasonably sensible and well-behaved, but they are normal children all the same. I therefore warned them very firmly about the dangers of silly play on the bunks. I actually read some of the accident details to them and then warned them that if they ever put themselves or each other at risk, the bunks would be dismantled and become two separate single beds.
With our decisions made and the beds ordered, the youngest child started demanding a new bed of her own. I had been hoping she would settle for one of the divans from the older kids' room, but it seemed unfair to insist when new kids' beds were so reasonably priced. We therefore helped her to choose a themed cabin bed with storage underneath. In fact there is far more storage space in cabin beds than bunks, which is what sold it to me.
Suddenly our house no longer feels too small for us. The kids' rooms are so much easier to keep tidy now with all the extra storage we have acquired. They also have a much bigger floor area for their all-important games and play.
