There are billions of websites on internet. Never in human industry has there been so much overload of data and information. At any given time thousands of new websites, new web pages, blogs, and forums are adding billions of bytes that can overwhelm any human. Even in your particular industry, there must be at least thousands of websites vying for viewer's eyeballs.
If this was not enough then social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. have shifted the way people interact in a radical way.
Search engines are rapidly updating their algorithms to keep pace with such huge amount of information travelling on internet. Search engines are only as good as the searches they deliver to their users. It is a big challenge for search engines to provide the best and most relevant and updated results to the users. With proliferation of so many websites, Search engines' task is not getting any easier. Not only they have to index all the sites available, they have to categories each of them correctly, rank them according to god-knows how factors like inbound links, content, and social indicators so that they can provide you most accurate search results.
In such scenario, it is becoming even more important then ever for a website owner to make a website that helps every entity involved - website owners, user and search engine - fulfill their roles in the best way possible.
1) Your website is not a maze: User Experience (UX) is the new buzzword. No longer can a website getaway with poorly designed and ill-thought of designs. The situation has turned in favor of usability. With the advent of Web 2.0, the focus shifted to information sharing and user centric design.
A website should have a navigation system which can be easily accessed by all users, across all browsers. This will ensure that your website is also navigable by search engine bots.
If your users cannot navigate then it may also not be navigable by search engine bots. There cannot be anything worse than a user/ Google spider visiting your site and going away empty handed.
2) Do not believe in 1-size-fits-all: All designers have their favorite browsers and usually design and test on only those browsers. The problem is all browsers do not show the same output. If your website looks a million dollar on Firefox then it doesn't mean that it will look as good in Internet explorer. Even same browsers show a website differently across its versions. Before rolling out your website make sure your website renders as you want in all browsers and major versions.
3) All pages came to this world with a purpose: A website should have clearly defined hierarchy. The main navigation should only take the user to main pages and sections of the website. Likewise, to enable the user to get to home page and main section of the website, all web pages should have links to these pages. Less important pages should not be linked from main navigation and rather should be linked from their parent sections.
Every web page should have different title and Meta tags. Each webpage should serve a unique purpose and let that be known by using unique title tags on all web pages. Search engine bots and users will appreciate it!
4) A website copy should never be copied: While preparing copy for a website, many times content from other website is added verbatim. This is so wrong in many levels. First off it shows you are just too lazy to write content for your own website. Secondly, it shows that you are incompetent. It also shows that you have scant respect for other people's property and are willing to break laws.
There are other reasons also. Search engines are nowadays faced with the problem of spam results filled with websites with low quality & copied content. Be responsible. Contribute to Search Ecosystem by providing original content on your website.
