While worldwide technology has improved our lives in many ways, none has been more controversial than the cell phone. What was at first only for the elite has now landed into the hands of the everyday citizen, and that included teenagers.
Much debate has been had over teens having access to this technology, but none ever more than today as cell phones have now given way to smartphones. No more are the days of simple phone call communications. Now web browsing, text chatting, instant messaging, video streaming, picture uploading, video gaming, and more can all be done from a simple hand-held device we still call a phone.
There are many activities that have caused concern amongst parent when it comes to cell phone technology and their teenagers. However, with every con there is a pro. This article is dedicated to the pros of teenage cell phone ownership.

1. First and foremost is the benefit of being able to be in contact with your teenager as they continue their lives outside of the schoolyard. With parents at work more often and the additional freedom a teenager usually has, it always pays to be able to get a hold of your child when needed.
2. More often than not, a teen can find themselves struggling with maintaining their class schedules, after school activities, and even their after-school jobs. These days, even the simplest of cell phones that aren't smartphones have the ability to program in schedules with ringtone reminders.
3. Waking up for school often can be a task in itself. All cell phones these days come with built in alarm clocks. While their room probably already has an alarm clock, a secondary alarm can really help reduce the possibility of oversleeping through just one alarm.
4. GPS enabled phones (usually smartphones) are a great addition for parents and teenagers alike. At times in larger metropolitan areas one may find themselves lost, especially if they are driving. GPS enabled maps can help safely guide your teenager back home or wherever their originally intended destination was keeping them from talking to strangers in unfamiliar areas. Additionally, you can enable web monitoring of the location of your child with certain subscriptions and apps.
5. Speaking of apps (for smartphones), there are a lot of apps (small software programs) for smartphones that can help your teenager in school. Some apps include scientific calculators, history apps that teach American and world history, kindle app (for downloading books), geography maps with history and facts, astronomy apps for constellations, language learning apps, and much more.
So these are just a few obvious possible reasons you might want to consider buying your teen a cell phone or smartphone. Parents will always have their concerns and these issues are best spoken over with your developing child if you feel your teen may abuse their technology.
