When you compare modern furniture solutions to traditional reproduction furniture, the sheer difference in terms of quality is clear not just from the point of view of construction, but the attention to the overall visual style as well. Older styles seemed to ooze character and elegance, with the skill of the furniture designer as much an art as a craft.
Today it seems that the emphasis is not so much on design, appearance and style, but on functionality and portability. Flatpack is a word that might be perfectly suitable for offices and some homes, and I'll admit that in terms of convenience, it's ideal. But just as instant ready-meals are convenient, you wouldn't want to live on them. Sometimes you just have to remember to keep convenience where it belongs, and not short-change yourself. Traditional reproduction furniture is to the home what a home cooked Sunday roast is compared to a microwavable pie.
Unfortunately I had the recent experience of moving house. However, I was at least comforted by the knowledge that I fully intend my new home to be a long term commitment this time. It's also a long way from the sort of flatpack build-in-a-day type property which seems so prevalent these days. You know the type - one day you're looking at a piece of grass, the next day the new residents are moving in.
My new home is a beautiful Victorian property, and as is often the case, it has what estate agents call character. But clearly the threshold of such properties should never be crossed by anyone holding a cardboard box containing the sort of furniture that's held together by a plastic bag full of screws and a good deal of faith. Instead, period properties and those with any kind of character deserve suitable, good quality traditional reproduction furniture.
I decided that what was needed was to introduce some well crafted, good solid traditional reproduction furniture which would bring into the property the character, style and elegance which would complement its architectural style. Flatpack furniture in a Victorian property is a little like pouring tomato ketchup on your caviar torte. There was only one problem with my plan - I didn't have any furniture of that kind.
The first step I took was to take a trip down to a few local auction rooms. These were certainly fascinating, and I managed to gather one or two nice pieces such as an occasional table set and a few nice paintings. But the main problem was that all I could do using this method was to collect items of furniture which were near misses, rather than purposely designed suites of furniture with a consistent theme.
I'm a great fan of buying online, from books to DVDs, but until recently the idea hadn't even occurred to me of buying furniture online. However, I spent some time looking for traditional reproduction furniture websites. For a fair time I was somewhat disappointed, since many seemed to be run by traders who had no direct influence on the stock or the designs, and in many instances it was impossible to fully furnish even one room with items of furniture which matched in style.
