The minute you found out you were pregnant you begin thinking about being a good parent. You want to do what is best for your child and will do whatever it takes to help your child grow to be healthy and strong. Here are some tips to help you become a good parent.
The first thing to remember is that there are many parenting styles and you need to choose what works best for you. There is no "best" parenting style. You need to decide what works best for you and your husband. You may need to combine styles especially if you and your spouse have different personalities. Many people will give you parenting advice, but only you know what works best for you and your family.
Life is about to change more than you can imagine. Some things that you find a important today will not be the same after the baby is born. And you need to be able to emotionally handle that fact. The baby will be your number one priority and you need to make peace with that fact that there will be many times you want to do something or have something a certain way and it just won't happen because the baby will change all of your best laid plans. You just have to remember your number one priority is that precious baby.
You will spend many hours reading books about babies and how to be a good parent. All of these can be good guidelines, but above all you need to trust your instincts. There will be many times and you just have to let all the knowledge go and listen to what that voice inside your head is saying to do.
While your baby is your number one priority, it is important that you take some time for yourself. Just 15 minutes of uninterrupted time can make a world of difference. Let your husband have some one on one bonding time with the baby while you go take a nice long hot shower or read a few pages of a book. Friends also want to spend time with the new baby, so let them, and allow yourself a break.
The last thing to remember is that it's okay to change your mind. Raising a child comes with a lot of choices and decisions. You may choose to go with biodegradable diapers, but a few months in want to change the cloth diapers. Every baby is different and just because you thought you wanted to something one way, you might just have to change course. For instance breast-feeding may have worked for every mother you know, but it simply may not work for you. So be flexible and change course if necessary.
