Last few weeks witnessed a hectic activity in SEO industry. J.C. Penny was one of the giants which were felled by Google due to some shady SEO practices. Few others felt the heat from the latest Google update which focused on content farms.
J.C. Penny's fiasco revealed the dark secret through which anybody with a generous budget can dominate Google search engine rankings in a short period of time. It also highlighted that while Google may perceived as the best search engine in the world at this moment, it has some very serious loopholes. So serious, that people are really questioning if Google is indeed the best search engine?
Google's search ranking algorithm gives lot of weightage to inbound links from different sites to a particular website. It is even better if the anchor text has keyword for which you want to dominate. The whole logic behind it is that Google perceives inbound links as votes of popularity and relevancy. If a site has many incoming links then it means that it is a popular site and hence needs to be in top page of Google for related keywords.
Let's take an example, suppose you have a website which sells gold jewelry. Your main keyword is "gold jewelry" and you have figured it out that lot of people search for "gold jewelry" on Google and hence, you can get lot of traffic if you can get top ranks for this keyword in Google search results.
There is a big loophole in Google algorithm. If you have large number of incoming links with keyword as anchor text then you are better positioned than other more relevant websites with lesser number of inbound links. So, in your quest to get first page ranks, you go on a link buying spree. You buy links from dental implant websites, real estate websites and even home d?cor websites. In fact you buy links from websites of any niche. All you bother is that you should get links. Google's algorithm could not evaluate properly if these inbound links are from relevant sites or not. It just factors in the incoming links.
Mind you, this is against Google's webmaster guidelines but obviously they cannot detect attempts at gaming them very successfully. At least they haven't been till now.
With so many high profile cases coming to light now, it is a very sad state of affairs in Google. Search results have been allowed to be polluted for too long and as usual, sites with money power are able to ride roughshod over genuine and relevant websites. It's about time that Google tweaks it's algorithm to evaluate inbound links in a much objective manner. Until that happens, Google is not the best engine but just the biggest search engine.
