The spirit of a nation rejoicing in its independence and birth can show a visitor the essence of a culture as well as its celebrated characteristics. This is true of Canada, and if you have never traveled to British Colombia, there is no finer day to go than Canada Day.
Canada Day is celebrated on July 1st of every year (unless that happens to be a Sunday, at which point it is moved to July 2nd) and commemorates the uniting of four provinces under a centralized rule due to the enactment of the Constitution Act of 1867. Originally known as Dominion Day, it not only celebrates Canada's birth, but also its eventual independence from British rule which was completed in 1982 after a long transition of patriation. July 1st, 2011 will be Canada's 144th birthday celebration.
Celebrating the holiday of Canada in British Columbia includes picnics, parades, concerts, festivals, citizenship ceremonies, and fireworks! Often Britain's queen or a regal figure head will be present at the main festivities at Parliament Hill in Canada's capital, but BC holds some of the best revelry in the country.
Victoria BC
Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia and attracts tens of thousands of citizens and visitors to its Inner Harbour for Canada Day. Activities transpire all day and tend to include family events, concerts by Canadian musicians and a beautiful fireworks show topping off the night. A Victoria BC hotel can be booked for months ahead of time, so if you plan to attend the festivities this July in Victoria BC, make sure to plan ahead.
Vancouver
Vancouver is British Columbia's largest city and has numerous Canada Day celebrations. One of its biggest is at Canada Place in downtown Vancouver. The night is topped off with a fireworks show over the harbour which is renowned to be one of the most spectacular pyrotechnic shows in the country. If you are simply in Vancouver BC for the festivities, between the numerous parades and street closures, it is best to stay outside the downtown core perhaps at a Vancouver Airport hotel and take advantage of the great skytrain service and avoid the traffic. You can also enjoy the free parking available at the Vancouver airport hotel unlike the downtown hotels.
Burnaby
Burnaby Village Museum host Burnaby's Canada Day celebrations with free admission. For those that do not know Burnaby Village Museum, it is a lovely 1920s village that has vaudeville shows, a carousel, and showcases Canada's heritage with costumes, dancing, food, and music from the early 1900s. The parade through the village is definitely a site to see.
Kelowna
The festivities in Kelowna take place in Prospera Place and Waterfront Park and attract an estimated fifty thousand attendees. Staying in Kelowna for the Folkfest which takes place during Canada Day celebrations is a great way to taste the culinary experiences of Canada; make sure to see the cutting of the Canada Day birthday cake. It is well worth it to extend your Kelowna hotel stay and enjoy the wines of the Okanagan Valley while you are in the neighborhood.
Kamloops
Kamloops celebrates Canada Day as a multicultural carnival. A visitor can see dancing and showcases by immigrants and societies native to Ireland, China, Scotland, Indonesia, Italy, France, and many more. Festivities take place all day in Riverside Park and local artist sell their trades, perform music and showcase cultural dances. The recently conceived Lumiere parade takes place after dark and is a most beautiful display of lanterns of all colors leading to a fireworks show ending the festivities.
