It has been over 26 years since this lady became a nurse. When she was young, two of her grandparents suffered from Parkinson's disease. She would take care of them when she was young since they lived with her and her family.
She currently works at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. A floating nurse is one what moves around, depending on what department will need her. Even if the US economy has shown signs of slowing down, still hospitals have been busy as ever. The expectations of patients these days have increased according to her. Public demands are higher, patients are sicker and the length of stay is so short you have to address a lot of issues quickly.
More hospitals these days have many patients to look after since more people are getting sick at the same time there is an increase in the aging population. There has also been a decrease in the nursing students training the hospital. Health care workers will be demanded more these days as the economy has called for it. It only takes understanding of knowing what a nurse does in order to change people's perspective on it. The job description of nurses has changed through the years but how people see them is still the same.
The director at a nursing school in Moline said that the economic downturn and recent turn of events will only escalate the need for health workers and the likelihood is that the number of incoming students and the number of graduates of programs is just not going to meet the demand. More nurses are needed in emergency room these days as more patients come in without any insurance.
The largest health care profession currently is nursing having a population of 2.5 million. Many people regard nurses as inferior to doctors and only looks as them as a handmaid to the doctor.
Nurses use to be women but now women have more option career wise, though the men entering the nursing field is still minimal. According to a 2000 study done by the US department of Health and Human Services, there were around 5.9 percent of registered nurses which were male.
A nurse is never safe in the hospital as they usually have greater patient loads, mandatory overtime and job hazards such as needle stick injuries, violent patients and back injury from moving patients. With the high demands in the operating and emergency room slots here are hard to fill. All hospitals are cutting deals with nurses.
On the other hand, there might be more people who will be interested to have a service oriented career. One needs to like caring for people in order to get a substantial income and good benefits from nursing. Most of time working as a nurse is worthwhile especially with the patients and that is something that you cannot see anywhere else.
