Hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists will be donning their leather jackets over the next ten days for Bike Week 2011. The annual event, which runs from 4-13 March and is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, is being held at the world-famous Daytona Beach in Florida.
Over half a million motorcycle enthusiasts are expected to take part in this year's events, which will include road racing, supercross, flat track and sportbike freestyle. Attendees will also get the chance to view some unique exhibitions, and attend a plethora of special concerts, street parties and - perhaps not the least popular with the teeming crowds stood around the Budweiser tent - bikini contests.
The main rally itself is a 3.2-mile route that takes in both beach and road as competitors attempt to smoke their opponents for the top prize. The first Daytona rally was won back in 1937 by Ed Kretz, who rode an Indian-made motorbike at an average speed of 73mph. The Californian went on to be named as the most popular rider in the world in 1938, regaining his title a decade after in 1948.
For those not planning to enter the most exhausting Supercross race in the US - and we don't blame them - bike manufacturers Kawasaki, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha and Suzuki join others to showcase their latest models and offer test drives outside of the speedway track.
However, if your interest in biking involves your feet being firmly on the ground, Honda is planning to throw an opening ceremony to remember, complete with fireworks, motorcycle displays and the attendance of its Supercross Red Riders team, who will be on hand to talk to fans and sign merchandise. And, with musical performances from Joe Santana and Lucas Hoge kicking off the festivities, Bike Week is set to be a thrilling ride from start to finish.
