Most parents have no idea about the trauma that nearly all obese children faced each day. Different type of emotional abuse has been hurled against nearly all children who are having problems with overweight. Some of this abuse can have long lasting effects on the child. To all parents out there who are reading this, below are the signs that you should look for in order to know if your child is hurting.

1.Seclusion – Some of the overweight child can experience seclusion or isolation by their peers. Most often than not, they are barred from attending or joining outing social gathering, and even joining a conversation. Even if they are not excluded, they tend to distant themselves from getting close to other people. Maybe because they have nothing to offer in the conversation or they are afraid to be ridiculed and insulted.

2.Passable grades – Emotional trauma can have a huge impact on a person’s mind. How? The person suffering emotionally can lose interest in doing the things that used to be important to them, such as studying. Anxiety and worries can result in loss of sleep, unproductive life, and inability to finish anything. This is the time when your child could be hurting the most; they cannot express how they feel so they just completely ignore everything and everyone.

3. Self Esteem – One of the things that a trauma victims experience is the loss of self esteem. Most particularly to a kid in their adolescent years, where hormones are raging. All this mix with overweight problems could lead to a disaster. In your kids’ case, it’s the loss of their self confidence. Your kid will find it hard to visualize a life that is different to what they are currently experiencing. Of course, if they want to change this pattern, either they lose weight or they just simple go through the motion of living without enjoying their childhood. A very tough experience growing in a situation like that.

All these can have negative effects on the child who are overweight. So it is best, that they know that they have a family that will support them in spite of their condition. Letting the child feels that the home is their safe haven, that in there no one can hurt them. All those insult are nothing because they have a family that loves and accept them for what they are.

Make them feel that they are not alone in their problem, that as their family, you will always be there to support them. But most important thing that you could do is to show them through action and not just in words. You can do this, by asking their opinion, the kind of groceries you will buy, especially if they are trying to lose weights. Preparing healthy food and letting them choose their own activities are some of the other way.

It is alright to give your opinion, but let them make the decision for themselves, most especially if that decision has anything to do with their overweight problem. Sometimes, the kid can slip on their program, do not punish them, and instead help them get back and finish the goal that all of you have helped plan for them
