Identity theft can happen to anyone at any time. You might even know someone who has been a victim of identity theft. Yes, you can take steps against becoming a victim of identity theft, but someone out there could still take your identity. The more careful you are with your personal information, the lesser chances you have of this happening to you.

Identity theft is a growing problem, even with the bad economy.
When you clean out your old files, make sure you have a good shredding handy. Shredding all of your personal information will prevent someone else from seeing it. Even if you think some of your things are okay to throw in the trash, don’t. Play it safe and put all paperwork through a shredding machine. No one can steal your identity if they can access all your information.

Another way identity theft can happen to you is by them taking your mail. They will look for anything that resembles a bank statement, credit card statement and or check that has been sent to you. If you notice that you are not getting your mail regularly from your bank or credit card company, you someone might be taking your mail and using your information.

Have you ever received a call from someone saying they are calling to verify your bank or credit card information? If you have, then you were just talking to someone who is a fraud. Do not give out any personal information over the phone unless you have called that company.

Your bank or credit card company will not need to call you to get updated or verified information. They will ask you to either come into the bank or they will send you a letter. Some people will not even think twice about giving out there information and they will give all that is asked. This identity theft method is sweeping thousands and millions of peoples homes. If you hear someone ask you for any personal information, hang up.

Many people who are committing the identity theft crimes are now penetrating your online information. If you do your banking and buying on the internet, make sure your passwords are protected. Make them more difficult rather than something very easy. The easier they are, the easier it will be for someone to guess your password and access your accounts. Also, change your passwords frequently. This will great cut down your chances of identity theft.

The main thing to protect yourself from identity theft is to monitor all your accounts. Check your bank statements, credit card statements and even your credit on a regular basis to help prevent identity theft, happening to you. If you see something amiss, do not be afraid to check up on it.

Call the bank or company where you see the discrepancy and ask about it.
Identity theft happens any time, any place and to whom ever does not safe guard their information properly. There are no 100 safe guards out there, but all of us can take precautionary measures to stop identity theft from happening to us.
