Times are tough-you want to invest, but you also want to keep your family fed. So, you've decided to raise chickens. What now?
Safety
The first thing to consider is safety-both for the chickens and for your investment. Building a chicken pen will do the trick. The pen can be as simple as a wire-and-post pen, or a taller fence to help keep the chickens from, err, flying the coop.
This article will discuss the basics of building a wire-and-post pen.
You don't need to spend an arm and a leg (or a wing and a thigh) to get good, sturdy materials to build your pen. You probably already have the sledgehammer and crowbar at home, but if not, you can pick them up at your local supply store along with the rest of the items.
You have all the materials, now what do you do?
1. Use the crowbar to dig holes where the posts will go. The size of the posts you use will determine how far they need to placed in the ground. The general rule of thumb is the larger the post, the deeper it goes.
2. Once you have the locations set up, use the sledgehammer to pound the posts into the soil.
TIP:
Try one first to ensure that it is sturdy and stable enough to withstand force. Once you are satisfied, continue putting the rest in the ground.
3. Once the posts are in place simply cut the wire to size and fasten to each post using industrial staples.
SAFETY TIP!
Don't forget to wear those goggles before using the industrial stapler.
4. Inspect the pen for sturdiness and stability. Use the hammer to secure any loose staples.
Just following these four simple steps will ensure you have a nice, sturdy pen your chickens can call home.
