Leather jackets are becoming an increasingly trendy article of clothing to have in your wardrobe. If you want to keep up with the latest fashion trend you can do no better than to invest in a good quality leather or suede jacket.

The recent trend for motorcycle clothing, especially biker jackets and biker boots, have made a leather jacket a must have piece of clothing. The array of choices available are often daunting but if you do your research correctly and decide at the onset what type of jacket you want and how much you wish to spend, you are sure to grab a bargain.

A good place to start is by asking friends or family for recommendations of outlets they perhaps may have bought a jacket from with which they are happy with. The next stop is the internet. Here you can view at your fingertips the numerous designs that are available to you. You can see what styles are in vogue at present and you can even emulate your favourite music or film star and buy a jacket just like theirs.

Once you have decided on the style of your jacket you need to choose what type of leather you want and what colour. Cow and buffalo leather is quite tough leather and is a popular choice for biker jackets. Sheep and lamb is lightweight leather which is often used for blazers and bomber jackets. Pigskin on the other hand is a thin leather and not very durable.

The finish of the leather jacket is very important as different tanning processes produce a different finish and can alter the appearance of the leather. The Nappa process creates soft durable leather however, for a soft and velvety finish a suede or Nubuck leather is what you are after, but be warned it is not waterproof.

Once you have chosen your leather type you must choose your jackets style. From biker jackets to leather blazers, suede jackets to trench coats, there are numerous designs to pick from. Do you want a belt or buttons, pockets or vents? Beware of imitations or fakes; they are usually easy to spot as they are made of poor quality leather. Once you have decided and bought your leather jacket it will serve you well. Pair it with jeans and a t-shrit for a trendy casual look or with a dress or trousers for a smarter style. If stored correctly and is well taken care of your treasured leather jacket will last a lifetime.
