I'm sure if you've visited various video sites like youtube, vimeo and metacafe, you'll probably have noticed the calibre of the videos are not exactly 'outstanding'. Terrible quality of sound, bad picture or awkward editing are to blame, or sometimes the content itself is just plane boring.
Let's look at a few things you can do to avoid these problems.
You should always remember that web visitors have very low attention spans. It may sound like a great idea to produce a 15 minute video with heaps of useful content, however, the viewer will never get to appreciate that if they click away within the first 3 minutes.
Pithier, interesting and shorter videos are usually better. Creating a series of videos on one topic will create higher percieved value, and more information can be spread over multiple installments. If your initial video is impressive, viewers are far more likely to click through and watch your other videos, as their interest will be heightened.
The other big advantage is that there will be more distribution of multiple videos, so the odds are more likely that your videos will be found.
The other important thing is how the video is presented, and the level of quality.
This doesn't mean you have to be an expert in video production, but it does mean you should put a little extra effort into making something watchable.
The key to good videos is sticking to some form of structure or script you've thought through, so you don't miss anything when recording.
You constantly see people who are obviously just "winging it" when they record the video, and it winds up being full of ums and ahs, and it runs twice as long as necessary to get the point across.
It is helpful in your marketing efforts to brand your videos, especially if they are all related to the same industry or niche. You could also use high quality stock images and video clips from places like istockphoto.com and bigstockphoto.com in your videos to make them look more professional.
You could use the stock clip with your company or product name, and use it with every video you produce, increasing branding and production value.
Adding a custom 'skin' to your videos can also improve veiwing experience. this can be used when embedding videos to your own web properties. Going further, using a custom player can make this even better, differentiating yourself from the standard youtube controls.
At any rate, the 'percieved value' will be increased. The fact is, the video will still be the same, but sometimes it's all about the presentation.
How "watchable" the video becomes will depend on the type of video created.
Perhaps you are not willing to stand in front of the camera to record videos. if you don't want to do this, the alternative is to use a screen capture software, or a slide show with audio. Once you have relevant feedback from viewers of your videos, you should become more confident, and perhaps consider advancing to more 'live action' videos.
