Through films and stage productions the stylish and chic leather jacket has built up an iconic status over the years. From Grease to Happy Days, Top Gun to Indiana Jones, the movies are best remembered not only for the memorable performances of the main characters but also for their leather jackets!

A lot of the hype surrounding films are mainly due to the press. Often the movies success is due to the media attention it attracts. This only goes to show that popular culture is often created by the mass media and characters in films are sensationalised, making the average film goer want to emulate their stars. This was no more evident than in the films in the 1950's and 60's focussing on the 'Greaser' culture whose trademark clothing was motorcycle clothing and leather biker jackets. This image was further popularised by the character 'Fonzie' in The Happy Days TV series in the 1970's. Many viewers wanted to dress like the TV star and sales of leather jackets rocketed to meet the demands of fans. The Fonz's original jacket that he wore in the series was further immortalised by being put on display in the Smithsonian Museum where it can be seen to this day.

Leather jackets are generally associated to the heroes of films but they are also often worn by the baddies to portray a tough and hard image. The excellent Matrix series is remembered for its leading stars, Laurence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves wearing long leather trench style coats. Another well-known movie character associated with wearing a leather jacket is the intrepid explorer Indiana Jones who wore his to protect him on his dangerous adventures!

Many hostile characters in films often wear leather apparel to promote their hard persona. This theme is also reflected in the popular subculture of Heavy Metal, which is often perceived as threatening by some due to not only its loud music but by its dark leather clothing. Leather accessories were also worn by the punk rockers of the 1980's and more recently by Brit pop artists.

The leather jacket appears so far to have a glittering showbiz career. It has appeared in many movies and TV shows, often as the star. The leather jacket has had numerous memorable performances and will be associated with many of the world's top movie stars for years to come.
