If you want to make a sound investment then look no further than your home. Any updates you make through home improvement, like basement renovation, are a big investment that fuels the value of your home. The downside any investment is that if disaster strikes in and around your home you could potentially lose your investment. Granted insurance can help but when you complete a full-on basement renovation you don't want to lose your time and money to disaster - and one of the biggest problems facing a homeowner in the basement is moisture.

Of course the modern home is designed to be protected against common moisture build up when the home is constructed and a smart homeowner makes routine checks to ensure that the home is still properly sealed and ventilated. Even older homes can be reinforced against common moisture build up but even that you may have issues with moisture.

A basement is naturally a damp environment because of utilities and water points, along with the fact that its below ground. Being cooler than the house above it, the moisture can settle. This why even the most well-sealed basements sometimes have issues with being "musty", especially where a laundry or utility room is present.

You can take steps to help reduce moisture load during basement renovation to finish a basement, but you have to be conscious of the sources of moisture in order to correct the issue. There is however one area many homeowners overlook when prepping their basement for renovation - the drain.

Part of the planning phase for your new basement renovation should be working with a specialized contractor (plumber) or a general contractor that can examine the plumbing in your home and basement, including (especially) the drain and sewer line leading from your home. If you want to protect your investment then this inspection is vital.

What to Look For

Their inspection of the plumbing and the sewer line will be done with a camera line that is fed into the pipe. They will move slowly through the sewer line to check for corrosion, cracks, breaks and areas where vegetation or roots have broken through. This damage can result in a blockage that sends raw sewage backing up into the home. Extensive pipe damage can even lead to the complete separation of the sewer line from itself or the home, creating a complete blockage.

With broken pipes, a blockage can occur quickly. This is bad news for any homeowner when it comes to the sewer line. Imagine pouring your money into a newly completely basement renovation only to have raw sewage backup into the space. This is where even a properly sealed and moisture-free basement can fail you and ruin your investment. The entire finished area would need to be stripped clean. Take the time to plan ahead and inspect your plumbing and drains. A simple inspection provides a great deal of protection for the investment you're about to make by finishing your basement.
