The first rule of thumb is to not turn the girl off. Being sarcastic, cynical, critical of others and depressed are certain to turn any girl away from you. Being outgoing and fun with a high energy can be very attractive however and works with most girls when trying to get them to like you.
Having fun and showing a girl a good time is a sure way to get a girl to like you. It's very good to get in the habit of entertaining a girl and allowing her to see your light hearted side, while also showing that you are a take-charge kind of guy. You want to be fun and funny, but not silly.
Things like magic tricks and other party games are great for stirring up excitement and curiosity in girls. They respond well to it when done correctly and not looking like you're trying too hard to impress.
Guys think that girls want to date jerks, but often that's a misconception. They want a challenge, a guy who they can't walk over like a doormat, but that also makes them feel good about themselves.
If you really want to get a girl to like you, listen to what she says, watch how she reacts and notice any inconsistencies as to what she says and what she does. Demonstrate your own value in her presence. If you have talent or skills in a certain area, women seem to really respond well to these, even if we can't explain why very easily.
When you're just meeting though, get a girl's attention and captivate her. Spark a curiosity in her about who you are. When her "buying temperature" is hot, move in and ask her out or even kiss her. You'll know when the time is right.
