When choosing the right type of sound system for your home, it is important to consider many different factors. Each of these factors are very important in the selection process and if you leave any of them out, you could end up with a sound system that does not quite fit your needs as well as it could have.
You must look at things like the size and shape of the room you wish to put the system in. You must also consider the available speaker configurations and think about where you might want to place the speakers within the room. How will they fit around the furniture you already have in place? Will you need/want to mount them on the walls? Will you need to take any special measures to hide the wiring so you don't have unsightly wires trailing all over your house?
Once you have an idea of where you will be placing the speakers; that will give you a good idea of how big those speakers can be and still fit where you need them to. If you have plenty of room this will not be as big of an issue, but in a smaller room or a room where you are trying to conceal the speakers this will be a bigger consideration.
The size of the room itself will also play a large part in determining the volume levels you will want to achieve with your new sound system. The biggest factors that come into play regarding the volume that a system is capable of is the size of the speakers and the output levels of the receiver. In a larger room you may want larger speakers and a receiver that is capable of putting out a higher signal to the speakers. This will allow the system to fill the room with its sound. In a smaller room you won't need as much and may be satisfied with smaller speakers and a lower output receiver.
Before you actually begin looking at the systems themselves, there are a couple of other things you will want to decide. Do you want to get your entire home theater system in one box, or are willing to spend the extra time and money generally needed to pick out separate speakers and a receiver? Speaking of spending extra, you will also need to know what your price range is. This is very important as it prevents you from spending more money than you intend to and allows you to shop around for the best system within a specific range.
