Being overweight is not just a physically draining ordeal, it wrecks havoc on your emotional well-being by causing your confidence and self-esteem to decrease. It's not a surprise therefore when you hear claims of miracle diets or pills that will help you lose 20 pounds in two weeks and you squander a small fortune on acquiring these diet miracles.

First of all, rapid weight loss can exacerbate already existing medical conditions. Being overweight puts stress on your cardiovascular system due to clogged arteries and a higher resting heart rate. Rapid weight loss can put serious stress on your already weakened body.

In addition to stressing out your cardio-respiratory system, rapid weight loss can cause gall stones. Gall stones are small, pebble-like substances that form in the gallbladder. This occurs when bile, hardens into these small stones. Gall stones are often primarily made up of hardened cholesterol. When one undergoes rapid weight loss, the body metabolizes fat and forces the liver to absorb excess cholesterol. If the gallbladder does not empty properly, this can cause gall stones.

Severe dehydration can occur when attempting a rapid weight loss plan. This throws off all the functions of the body and can cause fainting, weakness, headaches, and lack of energy. Many competitive athletes employ this method as a way to compete in lower weight classes. Rapid weight loss due to dehydration is simply ridding your body of excess water. It will not burn fat or calories. Excessive dehydration can cause kidney failure, heart attack and even heat stroke.

Rapid weight loss also causes loose and saggy skin in areas that had a high amount of fat. Not only is this visually unappealing, but it can have a serious negative impact on your self-confidence and self-esteem. It occurs when fat is metabolized quicker than the skin can adjust to the new size. It is much more difficult to get the skin back to normal once it has begun to sag, as opposed to preventative measures.

Lose weight slowly, at a rate of 2 - 3 pounds per week, in order to reap all the health benefits and to prevent possible health risks. Begin a diet full of clean food choices such as fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
