Every dog and every dog owner has his or her own different and unique set of dog training challenges. Each breed of dog has a different temperament as does each individual dog. And dog owners are no different. Despite the differences, there are some basic things in common for training all dogs.

No matter why you have a dog, he need to have some very elementary dog training. You certainly don't want a dog who isn't housebroken, who runs away or into the street, who won't sit, come or stay when you want him to. With some common obedience training and some knowledge of some dog training secrets you and your dog will be happier.

Dog Training Secret No. 1

One of the most important dog training secrets is that dogs are programmed for a world of leaders and followers, this is know as the pack. You have to be become the leader in your relationship and your dog's pack. One way to show your are a leader is to demonstrate absolute consistency.

You need to know what you want your dog to do and keep that constant every day and through every training session keeping your dogs attention focused on you during the entire training session. Never shout at your dog because that is a sign that you have lost control. Remember that dogs want to follow a leader they respect.

Dog Training Secret No. 2

This dog training secret involves getting and keeping your dogs attention. In dog training keeping your dog's attention is one of the hardest things to maintain. Most dog training consists of getting and keeping a dogs attention. Dogs tend to have short attention spans like children so try to keep training sessions short, about 20 minutes, or a couple of 10 minute sessions is fine.

Dog Training Secret No. 3

Another dog training secret is when you do your dog training make sure you do it in a quiet environment that is free of distractions. Use a quite tone of voice to talk to your dog. Say his name and explain to him what you want him to do. He may not understand exactly what you are commanding him to do but you can use your voice to keep him focused in your direction.

Dog Training Secret No. 4

The use of positive dog training is another dog training secret, and one that experts have found to be more effective than just a system of rewards and punishment. If you can have a dog who looks forward to training sessions because they are fun and full of rewards he will learn faster and better. Use praise or even a pat along with treats to reward his accomplishments. Along every step of the way as your dog learns new skills, you can reward him each time.

If he fails to respond the way you want, reexamine just what you are asking him to do and how you are asking him to do it. Different dog training methods work differently for one dog over another Before he can go on with more training lessons you and your dog might have to review some of the more basic dog training lessons. Use a stern NO, and use blocking movement with your hands, or withholding rewards when he doesn't perform instead of punishing him.

Remember to remain consistent when trying to get your dog to exhibit the behavior you want. Remember that it is in his nature (as well as yours) to want to test limits and see how much he can get away with. Consistency in dog training and rewards are what get positive results, not punishments.

Dogs are very much like humans in that they like to do things that are fun and make them feel good, where they get rewarded for doing what is asked of them. And they want the same thing their owners want, a happy and safe relationship with the ones they are love.

Understanding these dog training secrets will go a long way in making this happen.
