We all know that there are a lot of bad drivers on the road today. Some might simply be rude, others completely insane. The fact is, you never aware what is going on in another person's car. Defensive driving is quite simply protecting yourself from someone else's crazy behavior behind the wheel.

The number one rule of defensive driving is not treating someone the way they are treating you. Yes, that guy just cut you off and flipped you off, but that doesn't mean you have to race up next to him and play the grown up version of chicken to get him again. You do not know what is going on in their head and more than likely, you do not wish to. Therefore, let sleeping dogs lie and let the jerky driver speed ahead and out of your life. Do not try to get someone back simply because they made you mad.

Next, stay aware of what is happening on the road around you. It really is simple to get "in the zone" while driving and it's even easier to become hypnotized and distracted. This is the time when you are most likely going to experience something adverse to your own situation. Consequently, stay alert. Look to expect other drivers actions as this is one way that you could prepare for a situation before it happens.

Another crucial part of defensive driving is to understand that not everyone has the same respect of the rules of the road as you do. You might be very good around not going more than 5 miles above the speed limit, but someone else may feel it is perfectly okay to proceed 20 miles over while riding your bumper. In this type of situation it is always right to yield to them. Get out of the way, move over and let them get on with the day. You sitting in the way is only going to infuriate someone who is already in the hurry. Protect yourself by moving over a lane.

Finally, instead of getting an aggressive driver, make an effort to be a smart driver. Do your best to calm your own temper while behind the wheel and do not offer in to other people's aggressive behavior. Find a "Zen zone" behind the wheel and remain there. While speeding and in-your-face driving technique may get you there faster than someone who is doing yoga breathing behind the wheel of a car, they will not get you there safer. Bury the instinct to counter bad driving with your own. Staying defensive and alert will keep you safe and alive.
