The dart, originally a type of missile weapon used for hunting preceding to the invention of the arrow, has a wide array of forms and types. The modern age's dart, now used more for sport than actual combat, is made up of four main parts- the point, the barrel, the shaft, and the flight. Each of these help to add stability and variance in the flight pattern of darts, and depending on the materials you get for each one, you can create a dart that flies smoothly or that sinks as soon as it leaves your hand. Read on to find out more about each of these parts of darts and the ideal makeup of darts in general.

There are two different types of tips for modern darts - steel tip points and soft tip points. Soft tip points are specifically created for electronic dartboards to pick up on the dart's landing area more easily. Darts with steel points naturally do more damage and stick hard and fast when launched.

The barrel is the second part of darts, where the dart is actually held. Barrels have various builds, with most being made of tungsten, steel or brass. The heavier the material the more stability in flight, but the smoother the material the easier it is to slip up when gripping the dart.

Connecting directly to the back of the barrel is the shaft, which mainly connects the flight. The main variance in shaft is based on the length, with micro, the shortest, being .5 inches in length and longer shafts being in excess of 1.5 inches long.

The final part of a dart, which determines the way it flies is aptly named the flight. The right flight can do wonders to stabilize the trajectory of your dart as it cuts through the air. There are several shapes of flights, each one having a different feel, weight and effect on your dart. Some sample types are the combat, axis, heart, kite, pear and fantail.

A dart is only as good as the sum of its parts- be aware that mixing and matching parts, while possible, can get tricky if you don't buy them all of the same materials. Once you understand how the different parts of darts affect the make up of the dart as a whole, not only will playing the game get much easier, but choosing effective darts will become second nature to you.
