The challenge to all portrait painters is pleasing the beholder as well as having the ability to fix on a canvas a typical posture and other details that capture the subject and brings it to life even if there is a need to use the tiniest of brush strokes. A female portraitist has been told by satisfied customers that she has this talent of bringing her subjects to life. Nonetheless, the faces in her portfolio are not human even if they are relaxed, alert, aristocratic, moody, sensitive, and happy.

The portraits painted by this artist involve horses, dogs, and cats which are part of her specialization but she wants to try painting any kind of animal. She is a tall, slender woman who works in a studio upstairs in her home in the Maplewood section of the borough. She has always loved animals, and so about five years ago she thought why not put the two together.

The current project she is working on involves a horse running across a field for she has begun painting the animals in their entirety unlike before when she only painted the animals' heads. Even if the typical portrait is of a single animal, she has been able to make more than two and for her they make for interesting compositions. She gains clients through word of mouth and there are times when her clients ask her to paint more than one of their pets.

One woman commissioned a portrait of each of her three wolfhounds. In the same way as people are, each one is different here. Her camera, portfolio, and business cards are what she brings to dog and horse shows. It is in animal portraiture wherein you do not have a model that will hold still and pose for you and so it is necessary to have a knowledgeable use of a camera. Normally, each subject will be shot using one or two rolls of film and then she uses these to paint. If possible she handles the animal and spends time with it because she finds these important to see the true color of its coat and to perceive its character.

The relationship that exists between the animal and its owner is also something she needs to see. With their view of the animal and my view of the animal, I try to capture it as closely as possible. There is a need to portray the conformation of the animal correctly and when it comes to the expression in its eyes this is a key feature that conveys the personality of the animal in the portrait.

There are times when conformation is vital especially with show animals. Other than having to know a lot of animals you should also be familiar with what conformation works. From something like animal portraiture, the rewards are great. Considering how he was not able to stop chuckling and shaking his head during the unveiling, this was because he was pleased.

Many people commission portraits of their own beloved pets and many others order them as gifts for other animal lovers. What experts have mentioned is that the portraits are kept as special keepsake after the animal has died. She has been able to paint the portrait of a deceased pet in the past as photographs, if they are good enough, can be used for these portraits.

What she makes use of are pencil, pastels, and oils. A project at a time is what she focuses on when she works. Specific time frames are things she avoids for artists never work well when put under pressure. She paints one or two portraits a month. She tries to paint everyday but she does give herself a break during the weekends and since she is familiar with how exhausting painting can be for a painter she does take a break after finishing each painting.
