Have you recently acquired an iPod? Or are you contemplating buying one?

Glance around next time you're buying groceries or on the train. iPods are becoming as common as cellphones. Of course they are! The iPod is such a great gadget! But do you know the first act you must carry out after purchasing an iPod?

You must protect it! Most of us don't, even though the iPod purchaser spends upwards of $30 - $60 USD on iPod accessories. That's in excess of 30 to 60% of the original iPod price.

The majority of people are buying extravagant bells and whistles such as fm transmitters, docking stations, wireless remote kits. Don't get the wrong idea; these are great devices, BUT the first accessory you should be buying is protection for your iPod.

Get the basics before getting the fancy merchandise. iPod skins and cases come in a huge variety of styles and quality. Whatever your preference - there is a case for you!

By purchasing a Skin or Case you'll be protecting your iPod from these common problems:

* Click wheel scratches

* iPod screen scratches.

* Mirrored back scratches.

Despite the dominance of the Apple iPod, it still suffers from some large issues; Being easily scratched and possessing a short battery life. These issues push down the resale value of an iPod. This may not seem critical but if you want to trade in your earlier one for a more up-to-date one, these things will matter. Aside from that, who wants their own pristine, magnificent iPod all scratched up? Each time you take your iPod out of your pocket it causes tiny scratches!

There are scores of accessories readily available but the majority do not fulfill the basic needs of your iPod: Protection. You must protect your iPod above all else. Make sure you first equip your iPod with a good quality case, skin, or sleeve.

The most widespread iPod covers are as follows:

Cellphone sleeve converted to a case.

This is the most prevalent and are most easily available. Unfortunately the mirrored rear of the 3G and 4G iPod are easily scuffed by the sleeve as it rubs against it. If you can afford a 3G or 4G iPod then you can afford not to follow this route. Protect your purchase and buy something specifically for your iPod.

iPod Silicone skin.

This is the most common iPod case today. They are available every shape and size, color and texture. Be careful though; there are mass produced, poor quality cases produced in China with questionable materials that rupture easily. The second-rate silicone skins also collect dirt and dust easily. You can obtain better and branded products from the USA or Japan.

iPod Leather Cases.

iPod leather cases are also extremely prevalent. Unfortunately some users have stated that the Apple branded one tarnishes the mirror back and does not include a cover flap. There are many, quality leather case suppliers on the internet. Check the stitching on the case for satisfactory workmanship. Belkin and Digital Lifestyle are a few that come to mind.

Water and Shock Resistant Cases.

There is an increasing need for these types of cases because of our bustling and mobile lifestyles. There are a plethora of cases in this market also but be forewarned that a case can only be water resistant, not water proof. Water resistant means it can endure water splashes, but is absolutely not to be immersed in water and categorically you would not bring it diving! There are plenty of aluminum cases purchasable that offer excellent shock resistance.

With the new expertise you possess, you are now prepared to find the case that best fits your needs and most importantly, your style! Happy case hunting.
