I am a huge gadget fan and one of my favourites is my new Apple iPad, however I also own a Amazon kindle which is a very close second to the ipad in terms of functionality and usability. While I still use the other functions on the devices such as photos, music, internet surfing and gaming, the main reason I originally brought a kindle was to be able to carry lots of books around with me without the bulk and weight of paper books.
I will now look at the different methods of collecting and downloading free ebooks online to put on my tablet eReader and which methods I have found to be best.
Amazon - Amazon sell digital ebooks from their main site alongside physical paper books. The books are of the highest quality and are sent out in record time when ordered. However, you pay for every book you download and at up to $15-$20 a time it is not a good deal especially if your ipad or kindle breaks and you loose all your data.
Apple iBookstore - Similar to Amazon with a pay per download deal. The site has all the newest and most recent books available but for a high price. However the ibooks originally were locked down to only apple devices. This has now changed and they are compatible with most tablets.
Scribd - This is a website that allows any author to publish their work and for any enthusiastic reader to download free of charge. Scribd is unique as it is 100% free for both users and publishers. And allows unlimited access and downloads. The drawback of scribd is the legality of it as a lot of content on the site is copyrighted and the author will get nothing if you get a book from here.
The other thing about scribd is as any user can upload ebooks for download so you get a lot of the newest bestselling books on the site being nothing more than spyware or viruses.
Kindle eBooks - This is a revolutionary new site, it isn't free like scribd but does not suffer the legal problems and virus issues for their users. Kindle ebooks allows unlimited free ebook downloads online, and does this for a one off lifetime membership fee of $39 The site is one of the cleanest and easiest to use and gives access to over 40,000 free ebooks online without the need to pay $10-$20 per book. The site isn't only for the kindle either the service is compatible with all ereaders and tablets.
As you can see there are many options available for downloading free ebooks online but my favourite is kindle ebooks for quality of service and choice.
