When it comes to what must be done by boat owners in case there's a hurricane approaching, every marina has different rules. In the wake of Wilma and Katrina, boat owners preparing their boats in certain ways are laws that are required by the states. So how can boat owners protect their boats and themselves during a hurricane?

Most experts agree with these two basic rules that offer the most advice. First, plan ahead for what you will do when a hurricane approaches. Your contract with your marina should be checked as well as any additional regulations with your state. Your boat insurance company may have regulations affecting your coverage and you need to check these as well. To determine the amount of time needed to move or prepare your boat, conduct a dry run during the off-season.

Second, under no circumstances is it safe to attempt to ride out a hurricane in your boat. Even though others say being on a boat in open water is safer than being on land during a hurricane, the facts don't bear it out. Hurricane winds and tides can carry boats far inland or even sink them. Don't risk your life for your boat.

Moving your boat is always the best way to prevent damage if at all possible. However, this requires arranging for inland storage space well ahead of time. What many boat owners don't know is that often locked down before a hurricane are drawbridges in order to facilitate the evacuation of people from low-lying areas. The importance of moving your boat as soon as there's a hurricane watch issued in your area is increased.

Flotilla plans in place are what some areas have to move the maximum number of boats in the shortest time. Your local emergency management office will issue flotilla information in advance of a hurricane. Be sure your boat is properly maintained and fueled if you're planning on joining a flotilla.

There are some things you can do to minimize damage if moving your boat is not a possibility. Remove all portable items from your boat such as electronics, antennas, dinghies, sun shades, oars or any other item that may blow around and cause damage. Securely lash down any remaining items. Items like ropes may be in short supplies before a storm so obtain them well in advance.
