Even though characters in anime may have big eyes, unique hairstyles, and hair color you wouldn't normally see in real life, they are actually drawn to resemble humans. Characters may not resemble humans in all anime but for a majority of the anime out there, they do. This is something you wouldn't really see in American cartoons where body proportions are often exaggerated. Characters in American cartoons regularly appear more fictional or "cartoony".
Realism can also be seen in the reputed plots of anime. Characters in anime often deal with problematic situations that are presented in real life. Characters may die, seek revenge, go through a tragedy, battle with social issues and face love complications. Even in anime that appears to be more fictional, there are realistic moments. Characters develop throughout the series and a lot of folks can correspond to them. You uncommonly see any realism in American cartoons.
A few other things that you may be cognizant of in anime that is characteristic from what people see in American cartoons keep storylines that involve more depth and length, advanced storytelling, unique art styles, controversial subjects, and the use of the Japanese culture. All of these things helps distinguish anime from your typical cartoons.
