You have been working on your swim technique and are refining it so you are becoming more efficient doing the freestyle. What else can you do to help you improve? You can work on your strength, this always something you can integrate into your swim training. How about your mental training? Have you thought of ways to improve your motivation or performance from mental training?
As far as your strength is concerned, you can only get so strong swimming. You need to supplement your training with some time in the gym using weights or doing body weight exercises. Isometrics are a good alternative if used correctly. If you do not have access to a gym or would prefer to workout at home, body weight exercises will do. For good upper body workouts do pull ups, you can get one of those portable pull up bars that hang in the door way.
If you want to improve your mental capacity to improve your swimming, try visualization. Why would you want to train your mind for swimming? Just like any other sport, your mental ability or toughness can make or break you. If you're not mentally tough you may give up too early when you were struggling when you may have been able to tough it out and finish strong. You can develop the ability to win because you know mentally that you can do it.
Program your mind by way of visualizing what you will do in a race. If you picture yourself winning and there is no way you can lose, you will be ahead before the race starts. You can do visualization training everyday to train your mind by focusing on things you want to happen and blocking out the negative things.
