In order to enhance your memory skills, learning a foreign language is an ideal subject. Learning the vocabulary of a foreign language often requires associating sets of meaningless syllables of that language with words already existing in your native language.

Previously, people used to learn the vocabulary of a foreign language by repeating or pronouncing the words in their native language and then, those in the foreign language again and again. Below given is the most effective approach that tells you about how to learn a language by avoiding that tedious way of learning:

The Technique of Mnemonics:

You can learn certain words of the foreign language by using the Link Method. In this method, images are used to link a word to the language you speak with the word of the language you are learning:

“Grumpy” in English and “grognon” in French: This French word can be learned by seeing a grumpy person groaning with annoyance.

“Carpet/rug” in English and “tapis” in French: Imagine an elaborately designed carpet with a tap designed at its center and woven with chrome thread.

The Town Language Mnemonics:

This method is a well designed, effective mnemonic. It is used to fuse a complicated variation of the “Roman Room System” with the method described above.

According to this technique, the basics of every language or vocabulary are related to things we see or do in our everyday life that we may find in our village, city, or town. To use this technique, you can choose a city you are most familiar with. Use the things within that city as cues to revise the images that can be linked with the foreign language that you are learning.

Learning Nouns:

Try associating nouns with a place you can best relate to. For example, the word ‘bread’ can be associated with a picture of a loaf you see in the bakers’ shops. The names of vegetables can be learned by making images with the vegetables displayed at a greengrocer’s shop. You can associate the names of animals you have seen in a farm outside the city.

Learning Adjectives:

You can learn the adjectives of a foreign language by associating them with the parks or gardens in your city. Green, small, bright, smelly, cold, these words can be learned easily by relating them to the things we see in the gardens. There can be a pool, some extra beautiful flowers, a grove of trees, or some people walking around and having different characteristics.

Learning Verbs:

Verbs are the easiest words to learn in a language. They can be learned by associating them with some playing ground or sports center. In this way, we can learn all the words connected with activities such as lifting, swimming, walking, running, driving etc.

Learning Genders:

There are languages which give great preference to gender. A proven technique to learn gender is to divide your city into two zones. In the first zone, you can code information of all masculine nouns and in the second zone you can code information of all feminine nouns. If the language also has a neutral gender, then divide the city into three zones. These areas can be separated by busy roads, monuments, rivers etc.
