There are many injuries that can come from a car accident. They can range from minor cuts and bumps to more serious, life threatening injuries. All injuries obtained in a car accident should be treated in serious manner. Some injuries may seem very minor, but in fact could be extremely serious. That is why it is important to learn the signs and symptoms of common car accident injuries.
Head and Neck Injuries
Head and neck injuries are very serious injuries. They include traumatic brain injury and whiplash. The symptoms of brain injury can often be difficult to spot right away. If there is visual injury to the head then it should be treated as a brain injury and the patient should immediately get treatment. After the accident, traumatic brain injury can present itself as changes in how a person behaves and in physical impairments.
Whiplash is an injury to the neck. It is a common injury caused by the quick snapping of the neck upon impact. Whiplash can cause injury to the nerves, ligaments and muscles in the neck. It can cause severe pain and difficulty in moving the neck.
Another injury in the same area is temporomandibular joint injury. This is an injury to the jaw. Damage is done to the joint and ligaments in the jaw. It can cause cracking noises when opening and closing the mouth along with pain. It make chewing, eating and speaking difficult.
Back Injuries
Back injuries are another very common injury as a result of a car accident. Back injuries can effect the muscles, ligaments, bones and other areas of the back and spine. Symptoms of a back injury include pain, visible bulges, weakness in the limbs, paralysis, problems breathing and trouble moving.
Internal Injuries
Internal injuries are one of the dangerous injuries obtained in a car accident. Internal injuries are dangerous because they cannot be seen from the outside. Most often they are entirely internal and a person may not even be aware that they have suffered from internal injuries. A person may feel pain or discomfort from an internal injury. Internal injuries can occur to any of the internal organs and usually result in bleeding out.
However, fractured ribs are also an example of an internal injury. Fractured ribs could cause a punctured lung which would cause problems with breathing.
Injuries to Limbs
Injuries to the limbs are also common. These are usually easily recognized and they are usually accompanied by severe pain. The most common injury to limbs is broken bones that are usually visible. Some injuries, like ligament tears or chipped bones may not be as visible, but usually cause pain to signal something is wrong.
There are many injuries that can occur from a car accident. Many are not immediately recognizable. That is why, if you ever get into an accident, you need to seek medical attention right away even if you think nothing is wrong. It never hurts to at least get checked out after an accident to ensure no injury was missed.
