Famous today, chess, thought to have come from India during 600 AD, certainly has gone rings around the globe. Archeologists have even discovered artifacts from Scotland, that looked like chess pieces, going back to 1200 AD. As civilizations vanquished and exchanged with one another, the knowledge and renown of chess gradually propagated. The game slowly extended throughout different colonies after it became popular around Europe and now, it is a worldwide game appreciated by millions, whether as a profession or hobby.

Early chess pieces were created from stone and were hand crafted to represent the real classes that were struggling during a particular time. For instance, the slaves, soldiers, and monarchs had their own respective rendering in chess pieces, which are the pawns, knights and rooks, and kings, queens, and bishops, respectively.

Unlike standard chess sets, an expensive chess set is not only employed for games but also for ornamental purposes, with its lavish workmanship. More often than not, these exquisite sets are made for display or for collection, and not for game play. Though naturally, one can still employ these sets for game play.

One can readily find one, in spite of the excessive prices of most expensive chess sets, conveniently offered for retail. There's the magnificent chess set sold by the House of Staunton, which features a Wedgewood Jasper set in blue and white that sells for about $10,000. There's also the mammoth ivory set crafted from the ivory tusks of 40,000 year old mammoths found in Siberia, which would go around $13,000. The set featuring 14K white gold chess pieces, adorned with over 9900 black and white diamonds, produced by French artist and jeweler Bernard Maquin is by far the most expensive chess set today. The set goes for around $500,000. Most quality chess sets would run in pricing from $900 to $1,100.

Though when it involves the game elements, both high-end and usual sets are similar. However, table mounted boards are often included with high end sets, with the pieces often being made out of metal or glass and the board, from wood or marble. Well known designs, such as dragon or African animal styles, and typical features, such as magnetic pieces, are usual with top quality sets.

When buying expensive chess sets, the design of the house or the room is one of the most important concerns. Looking for a set that would go with and emphasize the room's decor will certainly give that beautiful and high-class feel.

Chess sets are usually valued by many individuals for their performance and the fun they provide. However, when to be used as accents, ordinary chess sets are lacking in looks and style. All of this however, can be altered with expensive or high-end chess sets however.
