Throughout most places the violin is viewed as stodgy. Some think that it is only designed to be part of an orchestra or other similar groups and therefore they don't even consider playing it. Its versatility has been proven time and time again in recent years as it is appearing in all forms of music.
While the violin isn't the freshest instrument on the scene, it is by no means the oldest. It is a false report that Nero played the violin during the great fire of Rome as it had not been invented yet. It came into existence in the 16th century. Since its invention it has evolved in a few ways. Some of these are major and some are minor.
Higher, more voluminous notes were possible after some alterations to the fingerboard. The neck was also extended in order to raise pitch. The first violins had heavier bass bars and their necks were glued and nailed to the body instead of mortised as they are today.
A few luthiers during the ages found ways to make their instruments improve with time. There are only about six hundred Stradivari violins left, but each is worth an estimated five million dollars. The most notable change was the creation of the electric violin. It was born in the twentieth century.
The violin is getting a change in image all around though. It is becoming more and more apparent that the supposed limitations of the instrument were due solely to the styles of the people who chose to play it.
Both types of violins can be seen in any genre of music. On a very popular show known as America's Got Talent there was a group of hip-hop violinists known as "Nuttin' But Stringz." Considering the audience this show has, this appearance has probably done more to change the image of violin in today's culture than most anything else.
By bouncing the bow a violin can achieve a completely new sound and style. "Smooth Criminal," is a popular song played by skilled violinists that utilizes this technique. Once you've mastered the violin, you can play virtually any piece of music imaginable.
Your violin and the skill you acquire with it is a worthwhile investment. Though the violin is gaining a new image, being able to play it can look good on various applications.
