Acne is a common skin condition, characterized by the incidence of inflammation, blackheads and whiteheads on the skin; especially on the face and other parts of the ‘upper body.’ It is quite a distressing condition, affecting people – as it does where they are most visible. Now if you go to any forum where acne is discussed, you will be sure to find people with questions regarding the fundamental causes of acne. Alright, it is quite clearly understood that the ‘immediate cause’ of acne is the blockage of follicles under the skin. This follicle blockage leads to their release of the sebum on them under the skin, which is what ultimately leads to the inflammation referred to as acne.
Yet people want to know what the fundamental causes of acne are – as in, what factors in turn cause the follicle blockage in the first place. The reason behind wanting to know this is probably the ‘why me’ mentality which so many of us, being ‘only human’ harbor.
Fundament Causes of Acne
1) Well, one fundamental cause of acne is, apparently, genetic predisposition. Acne seems to be one of those conditions that run in families. If you struggled with acne in your youth, then chances are that you may find yourself also having to help your offspring in the same struggle. So genetic predisposition comes out as one of those fundamental causes of acne.
2) Then there is hormonal activity as the second fundamental cause of acne. This is perhaps connected to the first, seeing that the hormones are the main mechanism through which genetic predisposition manifests. Nonetheless, this change in hormonal activity is mainly to blame for the fact that acne tends to afflict people during the stages in life that are characterized by major hormonal changes – like puberty and expectancy.
3) Third –and closely related to the second factor as a fundamental cause of acne is the use of certain steroids. These steroids have the effect of inducing significant hormonal changes, which can in turn cause acne, as seen before.
4) Use of certain ‘pleasure drugs,’ for instance those ‘high inducing’ amphetamines – perhaps like the stuff used in the treatment of ADHD is the fourth fundamental cause of acne. The exact mechanism for this is still subject to conjecture, but the correlation between the use of these drugs and the incidence of acne is an established fact.
5) Then we have stress, emotional or physical, as the fifth fundamental cause of acne. The exact mechanism as to how stress causes acne is again still a subject of conjecture, but what is clearly established is the fact that intense stress does indeed induce acne in some people. So far, the most plausible theory advanced to explain this trend is the one to the effect that too much stress causes the sebaceous glands (which produce the sebum on hair follicles, ultimately responsible for acne causation) to be overactive, ultimately leading to the incidence of the condition. Nonetheless, this is just one of the theories advanced to explain the acne stress connection, which according to many people in ‘acne circles’ is actually a strongly established connection.
