People get self storage units for a number of different reasons. Some get them because they need a place to store their belongings while they are in between places due to a move. Others simply realize that they have too much stuff lying around their homes but don’t want to get rid of that stuff and instead opt to store it. No matter what your reason is for wanting to get self storage there are several things that you should be sure are considered before you rent your unit or move your things into that unit.
Before you decide too hastily on a storage unit there is a checklist of items that you should complete before you make your decision:
•What size unit do you need: Figure out how much you need to store and then go look at the different sizes of storage units. This way you will be sure that you are renting the right amount of storage space.
•AC or not: What will you be storing? Do the items require storage in a climate controlled environment? This is a big decision to make as an air conditioned unit will cost more than a regular unit will so you need to be sure that you know what you want ahead of time.
•How will you move the stuff: This is a factor that many people tend to overlook. If you do not have a big truck, or access to one, you may be stuck making endless trips to and from the storage unit. The only other alternative will be the costly one of renting a truck. Look for storage units that are either closer to your home so that the trips to and fro won’t be so bad or look for a facility that allows you to use their truck.
•How secure is the unit: This goes beyond the lock, but you need one of those too. Does the storage unit have a fence around the property? Is there barbed wire on the fence? Do you have to have a code to open the gate? Is there even a gate? You have to look at all these factors to ensure that your belongings will be as safe as possible.
•Hours of operation: What time does the storage unit open in the morning and how late does it stay open? If your hours at work are nine to five and so too are the storage unit’s then you may have a hard time accessing your unit to get at your stuff.
•How expensive is it: While price should never be the first thing that you factor in, it should be factored in eventually. If you are pleased with everything else and find yourself with a choice of three good storage unit facilities to pick from then there is nothing wrong with letting the price be the determining factor.
When it comes to self storage, knowing what it is you are looking for and what you are getting before you hand over any money or move any items in will save you possible head aches and may also save you money in the end.
