Lots of people have no concept how hard it is to be a brand new mommy, it would make a good reality show People who have never had an infant seem to believe that being a new mommy is this glorious, always happy time in a women's life. While yes it's one of the happiest times of a womens life, you aren't happy all the time, feeling the 'baby blues' is typical and a percentage of women will experience postpartum depression.

Are you aware that over 50% of women feel some form of "baby blues" after they have given birth? So you are not alone, and certainly not a bad mother because you're feeling down. Many women can feel restless, impatient, anxious and irritable following having a baby. If you consider everything both you and your newborn have been going through the last year, then feeling these things should not surprise you. Are you able to think of anything more emotional than creating a new life, I cannot, so feeling emotionally spent seems perfectly acceptable.

Do you know the difference between 'baby blues' and postpartum depression? Well the 'baby blues' normally leave as suddenly as they came. Unfortunately for 10% percent of women the symptoms persist. The signs of postpartum depression can include, lack of appetite, low energy, not being able to focus, emotional lows and highs, sadness, scared of hurting the baby, or lack of interest or excessive interest in the baby. Realize that women with postpartum usually do not experience all of these symptoms, they will often feel different ones on different days, or perhaps the same symptoms day in and day out. Because mothers can believe they should not feel anything but joy, they may start to feel shame and guilt and eventually become isolated.

The worst part is no one knows what can cause postpartum depression. Factors such as lack of sleep, isolation after the baby is born, stress and hormones that disturb the brains chemistry are what some researchers think may cause postpartum depression. Many women think that motherhood is this wondrous awesome thing that should be one of the most rewarding experience in your life. Though it may be all that, it's also the most challenging most frustrating and sometimes thankless job you will ever do. Unfortunately some women become extremely depressed when all of these things happen after a child is born.

You may not be able to see that you are experiencing postpartum depression. You may think you feel down because you are working extremely hard and sleeping and showers aren't priorities. So if a friend or loved one expresses their concern, pay attention to what they're saying. If you recognize these symptoms or someone has expressed concern, call your doctor. A physician will be an important part of your recovery, you can not rely on just attending support groups. Do not feel ashamed or guilty. You may be feeling better soon, the support from both your doctor and friends will have you feeling normal once more.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms for a long period of time, it is not the 'baby blues'. but postpartum depression and you need to contact your doctor. You need to stay healthy for your new little baby.
