You will see Moxie Girlz everywhere this year. They are edging out Holiday Barbie 2009 in sales this year!
The marketers claim that Moxie Girlz empower girls. And you can't argue with that! They also have quite a few beauty and makeup games, and there are those who are not happy with that aspect.
Here's how I see it. There is certainly the element of creating a look around today's fashion. On the other hand, each girl has her own style. They promote individuality. They are so not Barbie dolls.
Yes, they have huge made-up eyes and pouty lips, as is the current fashion in the world. But who wants to be a dag? No matter how much of a rebel a person is, the fashion of the day is reflected in the cut of clothes and current styles of footwear. That's how it is in our society.
The Moxie Girlz website proclaims 'Every girl has the strength to do something amazing. As long as you don't give up on your dreams, anything is possible.' Wow! Even I find that inspirational, and it's a long time since I was a child.
There are four Moxie Girlz, and each one is an individual, showing her own kind of moxie.
Lexa is playful, silly and creative. She thinks that life is meant to be fun, and here's her moxie: It means being yourself, no matter what other people think.
Sasha is decribed as being friendly and clever, with a positive attitude. She helps her friends succeed and to see the bright side of any situation.
Avery is determined. She has a lot of energy and never gives up. She believes that anyone can do anything they want if they want it enough and really go for it.
Sophina is described as a caring person, being warm and thoughtful. She wants the best for the downtrodden and the environment, and believes that any one of us can make a difference.
Now, if my granddaughter had those attitudes soaking into her young mind, I'd be very happy.
Why is the collection called Moxie Girlz?
Well, it's hard to justify the 'z' from the point of view of correct English. But it does give a creative, groovy feel to it.
The website defines 'moxie' like this:
1. Confidence and a positive attitude. 2. The courage to go for it. 3. Energy in everything you do.
Gotta love it.
So yes, one of the website games is the Beauty Shop, but beauty is not the antithesis to being an intelligent and thoughtful woman.
I find it encouraging that Moxie Girlz are so popular. Young girls are easily influenced, and the dolls' attitudes could help them see that anything is possible for them.
