The best exercise to get rid of your belly fat is a combination of workouts that uses aerobic activity, weight training and workouts that's designed to isolate and work the abdominal muscles. It will depend highly on the person's dietary habits, the metabolic rate of their body and their ability to burn off the excess calories. Let's face it you're going to have to create a calorie deficit from what you're currently doing now, and lose some weight. You could have great stomach muscles, but right now it's covered by a layer of fat.

Increased physical activity can do wonders in helping to reduce your weight and fortunately your belly will be the first to go, at least that's where the weight loss will be the most noticeable, and for most people the easiest place to lose weight. That's where aerobic exercises excels, long slow activity that works the cardiovascular system tends to burn off more fat than does short bursts of activity (anaerobic). Not to mention that it does some marvelous things for your health.

Exercising aerobically can be as simple as a brisk walk several times a week, anything that elevates your heart rate for an extended time (20 - 25 minutes). Swimming, bicycling, dance aerobics, etc. is fine. Preferably something that's easy to do and something you enjoy doing so that you'll continue to do it even after losing your belly, it will help with keeping your weight under control. Physical activity helps to suppress the urge to eat while burning of fat and excess calories and makes a powerfully effective combination along with dieting when trying to lose weight.

Performing stomach crunches helps to shape and tone the abdominal muscles. While it's not possible to "spot reduce" performing stomach crunches isolates the abdominal area and helps to firm up the muscles. Sometimes a persons poor posture can help to give the appearance of a protruding belly, the abdominal, back and thigh muscles needs to help to support it. "Bicycle" crunches and reverse crunches also helps with the surrounding muscles.

You could also try "asana" which has it's origins in yoga, it's somewhat similar to crunches. While on your knees heels facing upwards, move your head to the floor as much as you can and maintain the position for around 30 seconds, then slowly lift your head back. There's a slightly modified version of sitting on your knees with your feet against your buttocks. If performed correctly you should feel pressure against your abdomen.

Another great way to lose belly fat is with weight training. It helps to shape and tone your body, and at the same time raises your body's metabolism causing it to burn more calories thus resulting in fat loss. Studies have shown that weight training raises your body's metabolism for several hours after working out. Muscles also burns more calories than fat and exercising with weights helps to build muscle mass.

Consistency is the key, with persistence and motivation you have a winning combination.
