There are two different types of drive's there are SATA drives and IDE drives. The best way to find out what drive your PC has is to just opened up the case and find out, you need to find this out before you can buy a new drive for your computer or laptop
To carry out this task you can start out by opening up your computer's case, or if you have a laptop by flipping upside down and opening up the panel on the bottom. Now it's time to find your computer's motherboard, this is a large flat circuit board with chips and cables. You are going to look at the wires they go from your motherboard to your hard drive or drives. If you find one small cable, then your computer uses SATA drives, this cable is usually labeled SATA; if you find a wide flat cable, then this means that your computer uses IDE drives.
Now examine the cables that go to your computer's power supply this is the box in the corner, with all the wires coming out. This is either going to be an SATA power cable or Molex power cable, the easiest way to tell the difference is that SATA power cables are black and Molex connectors are white. You can buy connectors that will turn one into the other, these are usually only a few dollars.
