In today's increasingly volatile industrial markets, Pirelli Tyres is to be congratulated for taking a step towards making sustainability a key part of its onward manufacturing strategy. Launched at a time when supplies of the natural rubber upon which the tyre industry depends are increasingly affected by unreliable harvests and volatile market conditions, Pirelli Tyres is confident that their new initiative will lead to less dependence upon raw materials plus the re-use of materials that have so far been generally consigned to the scrap heap. Indeed, Pirelli Tyres sees a strong future for recycling across the industry and regards environmentally-sound thinking as an essential requirement for the future.
Interestingly enough, environmentally-led thinking is not the only driver behind this initiative because Pirelli Tyres, like all other leading manufacturers, is fully aware of the increasing demands from emerging economies and the ongoing globalization of tyre manufacturing. Moreover, for Pirelli Tyres this underlines the need to develop new strategies and new solutions that will enable the company to maintain its acknowledged position as a world leader in tyre technology. At the same time, this new research programme is entirely in accordance with the way Pirelli Tyres is positioned as a technological leader.
At the heart of the project is the fact that Pirelli Tyres has recently announced that it has signed a research agreement with Danish tyre recovery company Genan to find ways of reusing industrial raw materials in tyre production. According to Pirelli Tyres, the simple fact of being able to reduce the dependence of the production cycle on natural rubber by 10 per cent could produce considerable savings. Moreover, it's quite clear that Pirelli Tyres believes that the use of materials recovered from tyres will in future become a necessity based on sustainability not just for itself but also for other manufacturers.
One of the key drivers behind this new project is the fact that Pirelli Tyres would like to lower its consumption of the natural rubber used in the production of its tyres. A significant benefit of this to Pirelli Tyres of course is that quite apart from any environmental considerations, the possibility exists to reduce costs and therefore obtain a possible financial advantage. In today's highly volatile market this is a sensible strategy for any manufacturing enterprise and Pirelli Tyres of course is no exception.
