In almost every case your really don't have to run any software whatsoever in order for your printer to work, so if you just got your printer, try just plugging it in and see if it works, if it doesn't it's time to unplug and go back to square one. Now start off by pulling everything out of the box and running the software that came with your new printer. There may be some pieces of plastic or cardboard that came with your printer to protect the moving parts inside, it's a pretty good idea to check the manual and make sure all of these pieces are accounted for, while you're at it it's a good idea to also make sure that it came with all of the CDs, cables, and cartridges it promised on the box.
Now you're going to go ahead and plug everything in, the printer into the usb port in your computer, and also the printer to the outlet. Once you've done this you're going to install and align the ink cartridges if the box came with software to do such things. A bit of a letdown is that most printers only come with half full ink cartridges. For the printer tests you're going to want to use as low quality paper as you can find, if not paper you've used, all the printer does is print lines on paper and you decide which ones look the way they're supposed to, once you finish these tests you should be good to go and ready to print to your heart's content.. Until you run out of paper or ink.
